Pray for Sudan

We recently had the privilege of hearing a guest speaker share about the ongoing crisis in Sudan. It was a sobering, heart-wrenching message that opened our eyes to a situation the global news cycle often overlooks. As the conflict enters its fourth year, the scale of human suffering is almost incomprehensible, yet the resilience of the Sudanese Church remains a profound testament to the power of the Gospel.

When faced with a crisis of this magnitude, it is easy to feel paralyzed by helplessness. But as believers, we are never helpless. We have been given the incredible privilege and responsibility of prayer. Prayer is not our last resort; it is our first and most powerful response.

To help us intercede effectively, we have compiled the most urgent prayer needs for the people of Sudan. We invite you to read, reflect, and join us in standing in the gap for our brothers and sisters.

The Reality on the Ground

Since fighting broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the nation has been plunged into what the United Nations describes as one of the most severe humanitarian crises of this century. The statistics are staggering:

Mass Displacement: Approximately 14 million people—a quarter of the country's population—have been forced to flee their homes. Over 9 million remain internally displaced, while more than 4 million have sought refuge in neighboring countries like Chad, South Sudan, and Egypt.

Severe Hunger: Sudan is currently facing the world's worst hunger crisis, with over 30 million people in desperate need of humanitarian assistance.

Targeted Violence: Civilians have been caught in the crossfire, with alarming reports of targeted violence, mass executions, and the destruction of essential infrastructure, including hospitals and churches.

Despite this devastation, local church leaders are refusing to abandon their communities. Pastor Tariq, a senior church leader ministering in a refugee camp, recently shared his perspective:

"We cannot just sit idle and do nothing because of the war. Wherever we go and wherever we are, we are ready to share the Word of God... God has brought us here to help people. This is why we have committed ourselves."

5 Specific Ways to Pray for Sudan

Let us unite our hearts and voices around these five specific prayer points:

1. Pray for an Immediate and Lasting Peace

The violence between warring factions continues to devastate communities across the Kordofans, Darfur, and Blue Nile State. Pray for a swift and peaceful end to the conflict. Ask God to intervene in the hearts of military and political leaders, moving them toward a lasting ceasefire and a commitment to justice.

2. Pray for the Displaced and Vulnerable

With millions uprooted, the need for basic survival is critical. Pray for the safety and provision of the 14 million displaced individuals. Ask God to protect the most vulnerable, especially women and children, from exploitation and violence. Pray that they would find secure shelter, clean water, and daily bread.

3. Pray for Unhindered Humanitarian Access

Both warring sides have frequently restricted aid agencies from reaching those in desperate need. Pray that safe humanitarian corridors will be opened immediately. Ask God to protect the aid workers who are risking their lives to deliver food, medicine, and relief supplies to starving communities.

4. Pray for the Strength of the Sudanese Church

Christians in Sudan make up a small minority and face immense pressure from all sides . Yet, they are actively serving as the hands and feet of Jesus. Pray that God will grant pastors and church leaders the wisdom, strength, and resources they need to minister to the traumatized. Pray that the Church would remain a beacon of hope and that many would come to know Christ through their faithful witness.

5. Pray for Deep Emotional and Spiritual Healing

The trauma of war leaves scars that outlast the physical conflict. Pray for the "God of all comfort" to draw near to those who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. Pray that the brokenhearted would encounter Jesus, the Great Physician, and find complete emotional and spiritual restoration in Him.

A Call to Persistent Prayer

The Archbishop of Khartoum, Ezekiel Kumir Kondo, recently urged the global church: "We are urging groups to silence the guns, to stop the war and to speak peace. This is important. Because people are dying. People are hungry."

The people of Sudan need our sustained intercession. Let us commit to remembering them in our personal quiet times, around our dinner tables, and in our corporate worship.

"The Lord is near the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:18
